Regional model for design storm estimation

چکیده
Papers published in Hydrology and Earth System Sciences Discussions are under open-access review for the journal Hydrology and Earth System Sciences Abstract Several hydrological analyses need to be founded on a reliable estimate of the design storm, which is the expected rainfall depth corresponding to a given duration and probability of occurrence, usually expressed in terms of return period. The annual series of precipitation maxima for storm duration ranging from 15 min to 1 day are observed at 5 a dense network of raingauges sited in northern central Italy are statistically analyzed using an approach based on L-moments. The study investigates the statistical properties of rainfall extremes and identifies important relationships between these properties and the mean annual precipitation (MAP). On the basis of these relationships, we develop a regional model for estimating the rainfall depth for a given storm duration and 10 recurrence interval in any location of the study region. The reliability of the regional model is assessed through Monte Carlo simulations. The results are relevant given that the proposed model is able to reproduce the statistical properties of rainfall extremes observed for the study region.

متن کاملModeling of Atmospheric Regional Circulation for Event of Most Severe Spring Dust Storms on West of Iran
Dust phenomenon is a natural occurrence that occurs widespread in arid and semi-arid regions of the world, especially in the sub-equatorial latitudes. This phenomenon is among the greatest environmental problems in the world. The release of this destructive climatic phenomenon in a scattered manner in the atmosphere varies in size, time and concentration. Since this phenomenon is influenced...
متن کاملEstimation of storm peak and intra-storm directional-seasonal design conditions in the North Sea
Specification of realistic environmental design conditions for marine structures is of fundamental importance to their reliability over time. Design conditions for extreme waves and storm severities are typically estimated by extreme value analysis of time series of measured or hindcast significant wave height, HS. This analysis is complicated by two effects. Firstly, HS exhibits temporal depen...
متن کاملDesign Rainfall Estimation for Short Storm Durations Using L-Moments and Generalised Least Squares Regression-Application to Australian Data
Short duration design rainfall intensity data is a basic input to many water related projects, particularly in urban drainage design. The main problem in deriving short duration design rainfall data is the lack of continuous pluviograph rainfall data. The use of regionalisation techniques is common in design rainfall estimation, which pools data from a large region. This paper presents a region...
متن کاملDerivation of Intensity -Duration-Frequency -Area(IDFA) Curves for Mashhad City
A knowledge of rainfall distribution over a finite area is needed for small bydraulic structures design. Hydrologists have always been concerned about Depth- Area- Duration (DAD) for a specific storm in a watershed. An intense storm occurred on June 6, 1992 which claimed some lives in parts of Mashhad, Khorasan Province, Iran. Data of rainfall depth at 29 raingauge stations around the city and ...
